The Porsche 911 engine, unlike the car for which it was designed, has been a winner from the first. Indeed, I think it may well be the best production auto mobile engine in existence. The layout is right (one of my English friends insists that the only proper angle for a vee type engine is 180 degrees), the response is right, and the reliability is beyond reproach. Although Dr. Porsche told his men back at the end of the fifties that he wanted a two-liter power plant with no “stretch” built in, the engineers have increased its capacity by 80 percent and its power by about as much, all the while keeping the engine in line with strict antipollution standards that were not even dreamed of when it was designed. Now with twin plugs, but still with only a single cam per bank and two valves per cylinder, it is incredibly smooth, flexible, and quick-revving. It still makes a wonderful sound but not quite so much of it, as the engine is part y encapsulated in deference to Europe a noise limits.
